Cardiac diagnostics in Shanghai

Holter monitoring in Shanghai.

A Holter monitor is a portable ECG recorder worn during everyday life. It records heart rhythm over a longer period than a resting ECG, helping investigate symptoms that come and go. Your clinician chooses the recording period around the question being assessed.

Your visit

When longer rhythm monitoring may help.

A cardiologist may consider monitoring when a brief ECG has not captured the rhythm during symptoms.

  • Intermittent racing, fluttering or skipped beats
  • Dizziness or fainting that needs a rhythm assessment
  • Review of a suspected or known arrhythmia
  • Symptoms whose timing may help guide investigation

Your assessment

Fitting, wearing and returning your monitor.

Recordings commonly last 24 or 48 hours, sometimes longer. Confirm the duration and instructions for the device you are given.

01

At the fitting appointment

Electrodes attach to your chest and connect to a small recorder. Wear clothing that gives easy access to your chest and tell the team about sensitive skin or adhesive reactions.

02

During your normal day

Follow the team’s activity instructions. Keep a diary of the time, symptoms and what you were doing. If your device has an event button, ask when to press it.

03

Return the device as arranged

The recording is downloaded for analysis and reviewed with your symptom diary. Confirm the return arrangements and how you will receive the findings.

Specialist care

Making the recording useful.

The rhythm trace and symptom timing are considered together. Monitoring records information; it does not itself provide treatment.

01

Care for the equipment

Water restrictions differ by device. Ask about bathing, showering and exercise before you leave, and follow the fitting team’s instructions.

02

Report recording problems

Ask whom to contact if an electrode comes loose, the recorder is uncomfortable or you are unsure whether it is recording.

03

Review the pattern

If symptoms are not captured, your cardiologist may consider a different monitoring approach. The next step depends on the findings and your history.

Common questions

About Holter monitoring.

How is a Holter monitor different from a resting ECG?

A resting ECG is a short recording while you lie still. A Holter records over a longer period as you go about daily activities, which can help capture intermittent symptoms.

Can I shower with a Holter monitor?

Do not assume it is waterproof. Follow the instructions for your particular recorder; some devices must stay dry. Confirm whether and how it can be removed before attempting this.

What should I write in the symptom diary?

Record the time of an episode, what you felt and what you were doing. Bring the diary back with the monitor so the team can compare it with the recording.

Will someone be watching my heart rhythm live?

Do not rely on a Holter as an emergency alert service. Confirm your device’s arrangements with the team. Severe symptoms need urgent assessment rather than waiting for a report.

Can I arrange monitoring in English?

Tell patient services your language preference and any existing test request. The team will confirm the appointment, recording period, preparation and fees.
